Adjustment Problems among Bachelor Level Nursing Students of Selected Colleges in Pokhara

Abstract

Background: Adjustment problems are common among newly enrolled nursing students who undergo an active adjustment phase when they enter college. This study aimed to assess adjustment problems among bachelor-level nursing students in selected colleges of Pokhara.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 130 nursing students from selected nursing colleges in Pokhara, Kaski, from 17–30 December 2023. A purposive sampling technique was used. Data were collected using the validated Students Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) rating scale, and associated factors were assessed using structured questions. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

Results: The majority of students were aged 18–22 years with a mean age and SD (19.4 ± 0.8) years. Most respondents (76.2%) joined the nursing profession with personal interest. Overall, 95.4% had a moderate level of adjustment problems. Adjustment difficulties were reported due to being away from home (32.9%), changes in living arrangements (30.9%), challenges in socializing (23.1%), and adapting to a new social environment (24.7%). Additionally, 30.8% struggled with time management and study skills, 32.3% had difficulties adjusting to classes and workload, 22.3% were confused about their educational career, and 17.7% experienced adjustment issues related to health problems.

Conclusion: Most of the BSc. nursing students experienced moderate adjustment problems influenced by environmental, social, and personal factors. Counseling and supportive programs for newly enrolled BSc. Nursing students are essential to enhance their adjustment and overall well-being.
